A Protein-Rich Diet Boosts the Weight Loss Benefits of Exercise
A study at the University of Illinois in the US suggests that a protein-rich diet boosts the weight loss benefits of exercise (Layman et al., 2005).
Women who ate a protein-rich diet lost significantly more body fat when they exercised regularly (5 x 30 minute walking sessions; 2 x 30 minute weight training sessions per week) compared with those who ate a high carbohydrate diet containing the same number of calories.
Almost 100% of The Weight Loss Was Fat
More Interestingly, almost 100% of the weight loss in the high protein dieters was fat, and much of that was from the abdominal region. In contrast, in the high-carbohydrate group, up to a third of the weight loss was muscle.
Researchers suggest that the protein diet worked better because it contained a high level of leucine, which works with insulin to stimulate fat-burning while preserving muscle.
